33 1/3 Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew
Bitches Brew by Miles Davis is a masterpiece of a jazz record that blends elements of jazz with rock and defies expectations of both genres. It marks a continuation of Davis' electric period that incorporated electric piano and guitar. The album was largely improvised, with scant direction from Miles Davis, and so the musicians had to communicate and pay attention to each other. The album also marked an important advance in the concept of the studio as a musical instrument; featuring tape loops, delays, and reverb effects done in the post-production process. Using extensive tape editing, the original recordings were structured into new compositions that were later adapted by the band in live concerts. George Grella Jr. takes a deep dive on the Prince of Cool's in this work jazz fans won't want to miss.
