Artiphon Instrument 1

The Artiphon Instrument 1 is an MPE-capable MIDI controller with a unique playing interface, allowing users to interact with it in a number of different ways—making for an expressive and versatile instrument. There are four main modes of operation: guitar with strumming, violin with bowing, piano with tapping, and drum with percussive hits. There are additionally four preset modes that all you to mix and match sounds, tunings, and methods to suit your needs.

The surface can be set to custom tunings to allow the whole surface to be in a single key (rather than the default chromatic layout). The Instrument 1 includes pressure sensitivity, aftertouch, and MPE compatibility, allowing for individual articulation and inflection on each note when used with an appropriate synthesizer or software. The Instrument 1 doesn't have a mod wheel, but rather uses the motion of the device as another way to affect your sounds.

The two onboard speakers provide the same level of amplification as an acoustic guitar, and the all-day battery life allows you to take the Instrument 1 with you on the go. It has Mac, Windows, and direct iOS capabilities, allowing you to use it to control all the music making apps on your mobile device. The built-in arpeggiator lets you come up with new melodies and has selectable tempo and divisions. The Instrument 1 is a new kind of controller that provides flexibility of playing styles and techniques, and will work anywhere.
