Beanie Bunnie Moo Moo

Offering some fresh takes on a classic architecture, the new Moo Moo dual oscillator from Beanie Bunnie sports a host of features that set it apart from the wide variety of similar oscillators in Eurorack format. Far more than a mere variation on a theme, Moo Moo has a number of tricks up its sleeve to offer something different to even the most dedicated of additive synthesists.

Of course, all the typical features of this Buchla-inspired design are included. Two through-zero analog oscillators are mirrored beside one another, with direct outputs for a variety of classic waveshapes. Through-zero and exponential FM inputs are both included, with a dedicated attenuator for through-zero FM. A sync input is available that can be switched from soft to hard sync with a long press of the mode button. All this is normal and expected of any dual oscillator worth its salt, but Moo Moo doesn't stop there.

Among its five waveform outputs per oscillator are sine, triangle, down-ramp, square, and pulse waves. The addition of pulse waveforms and dedicated pulse-width modulation knobs/CV inputs brings a new flavor of modulation unseen in most Eurorack dual analog oscillators. The full range of modulation is available here, allowing for interesting artifacts and dropouts when the duty cycle is pushed to either extreme.

Both oscillators feature a range of one octave on the large fine tuning knob, with a TZ offset knob that acts as a coarse tune control when no FM is being applied. This octave is switchable via the octave knobs, but may also be controlled directly via CV. Octave CV functionality is another exciting feature in a dual-oscillator, particularly because of the vast changes in timbre possible when aggressively changing the frequency of a frequency-modulated oscillator.

Adding even further control, each oscillator has a two-channel mixer with mix CV input and knob control, allowing you to mix Moo Moo's waveform outputs or add external signals. This is especially handy for creating texture and movement within a timbre by applying modulation to mix and blend waveform types before sending out to other modules or back into Moo Moo's many CV inputs for cross-modulated fun. Each of these mixers also inverts the signal, allowing for 4 quadrant ring modulation by using one mixer to invert a sine wave, then crossfading between the inverted and non-inverted copy in the other mixer.

Lastly and perhaps most excitingly, Moo Moo adds a filtered noise source to the mix that greatly expands its timbral and CV capability. The noise source is filtered by an analog state variable filter, the type of which can be changed with the mode switch. Controls for resonance and filter frequency are available, the latter of which also has a dedicated CV input. A noise level control injects this signal into the through-zero FM circuit, mixed with whatever is on the through-zero FM input, while a dedicated output lets you send the noise elsewhere around your system. For creating glitchy FM drums and percussion this is the ultimate feature, allowing you to dial in a wide range of tones from tuneful bells and kicks to brutally modulated snares and cymbals.

If you're looking to add a dual oscillator to your rack, or have one already and want some new flavor within similar territory, consider picking up Moo Moo for a dual-oscillator powerhouse brimming with modulation potential.
