Teenage Engineering EP-133 K.O. II

Stepping into the ring is teenage engineering's newest knockout instrument: the EP-133 K.O. II, an evolution of the hit PO-33's sound, size, and concept as an instrument. K.O. II builds upon the workflow of teenage engineering's original compact sampler, not only increasing its physical size but also its power and flexibility. But there's so much more to the K.O. II than just its sampling capabilities. A supercharged sequencer expands on the established PO-style workflow, with increased track lengths up to 99 bars and newfound ease of iterating upon ideas frees you from having to always think in 16-step chunks. Even beyond its own samples, K.O. II's powerful sequencer can also be used to control external instruments, synthesizers, and drum machines.

With more powerful hardware at its disposal, the K.O. II takes the opportunity to expand upon the sampling capabilities of its predecessor. In addition to supporting stereo audio, its 64MB of memory gives you 20 seconds of audio recording at 16-bit, 46kHz, and split among up to 999 sample slots. What might seem like constraints actually serves as creative limitations, existing in a similar spirit as the most beloved vintage samplers and thriving upon immediacy and ease of use. And just like the PO-33, K.O. II features a built-in microphone as well as an audio line input, ensuring that you can sample anything at any time in any place.

But perhaps the biggest place the K.O. II sees changes is with its sequencer. Unlike the very simple Pocket Operator approach of chaining together multiple 16-step sequences, a K.O. II project allows you to mix and match four groups, each with their own sequence length up to 99 bars. This generous flexibility lets you riff on ideas and experiment until things feel just right, before committing and building again. But just like the Pokect Operators, you can inject spontaneity into sequences with punch-in effects—which are now even more dynamic than ever thanks to K.O. II's pressure-sensitive keys. Additionally, an assignable performance fader puts another layer of performability into your music.

K.O. II also just might be the most open and flexible of teenage engineering's instruments right out of the box. Beyond stereo audio I/O, you're able to connect the K.O. II to all kinds of analog, digital, and virtual instruments thanks to the inclusion of ports for MIDI, analog sync, and USB-C. Regardless of how you choose to use it, the EP-133 K.O. II is destined to be the heavyweight champ of your electronic music setup.
