Verbos Random Sampling

Inspired by the Buchla 265 & 266 and the legendary ASR Fortune module, the Verbos Electronics Random Sampling module adds uncertainty and randomness to any flavor of Eurorack modular synthesizer patch. The module features two fluctuating random outputs with dedicated CV inputs for controlling the fluctuation speed. Additionally, there’s a random gate output that loosely follows the fluctuating voltages, though it can still produce some singularly surprising results.

The module’s features do not stop there. A quantized random voltage section provides stepped random voltages with selectable number of random "options," allowing users to hone in on exactly how random the outputs should be. If all that isn’t enough, there’s also an analog shift register on board that brings four phases of a chained sample and hold. The sample and hold is also able to be used as four separate S&H channels and makes the module even more prone to sonic unpredictability.

Random Sampling | Analog Shift Register basics
The Analog Shifter Register within the Random Sampling happens to be one of the most questioned features in the product line. To demonstrate a fairly basic use, we created a two voice patch using the Harmonic Oscillator and the Complex Oscillator.
An 8 step sequence from the Voltage Multistage was sent into the "c.v. input" of the Analog Shift Register which was then, triggered (or advanced) by the Voltage Multistage. the first A.S.R output was sent into the "pitch" CV input of the Complex Oscillator while output 4 was sent to the Harmonic Oscillator. In effect, the Complex Oscillator was receiving the CV information first then the Harmonic Oscillator was receiving the same version, delayed by 3 steps.
In the video, we slowly build the sequence so it is easily to follow visually. Watch the LEDs of the Analog Shift Register as we input control voltage signal, additionally, the voices are panned slightly left/right so use headphones to fully hear the effect.
Random Sampling | Multiple Noise Sources
To demonstrate the Random Sampling as a voice within a patch, we called upon its ability to generate a wide array of noise for more percussive leaning sounds. To further push this idea, we utilized the 707 for additional rhythmic support. All sounds that aren't from the 707 were generated from the Random Sampling.
